Rose and Candle Ceremony Stirs Emotions

The Rose and Candle Ceremony was held on May 11, 2018. In addition to the traditional exchange of the rose and candle , the Alumna of the Year and the Young Alumna of the Year were recognized during the ceremony. Congratulations to Suzanne Buechert Salmo and Maggie Slapshak '18.

The Rose and Candle ceremony carries symbolic meaning. First, each senior lights a candle and passes the lit candle to a junior. The light of this candle symbolizes the leadership and responsibilities that the current senior class holds, and is now passing onto the junior class. Then, each junior presents a senior with a rose. This rose symbolizes the beautiful and everlasting friendships and fidelity among the senior class that they are taking with them as the graduate. After each exchange, the junior extinguishes the flame on her candle and takes her place along the perimeter of the auditorium. After every junior and senior exchange gifts, the juniors re-light their candles to signify that they are the new light of the school, forming a circle of light around the entire school community.
