Though not an alumna of Incarnate, Mary Lou is about as close as one can get. After graduating from St. Theresa's Academy in Kansas City, MO and going on to earn a degree in Education from UMKC, Mary Lou began her association with IWA as a physical education teacher in 1972. From 1972 to 1977 she acted first as the assistant basketball coach and then varsity basketball coach. For three years – 1972-75 – she was the varsity volleyball coach, as well. In 1976, she began the tennis program at IWA, acting as tennis coach, and in 1983 began what was to become IWA's stellar soccer program. As the sole physical education teacher during those years, she taught every student who attended IWA. She is remembered with awe and fondness by the students she taught and coached. After leaving IWA, Mary Lou became a career and technical education representative of Glencoe McGraw-Hill publishing company, partnering with the Family and Consumer Sciences section of the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and sharing with Missouri a national perspective on what other states were doing in the field. Through Glencoe, Mary Lou also provided financial support for professional development activities, including the funding of speakers, receptions, and curriculum resources for Missouri family and consumer sciences educators. She has received many professional accolades during her years with Glencoe McGraw-Hill, including numerous sales awards and the Certificate of Appreciation award from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Though her years in publishing took her far from IWA, Mary Lou never forgot her "second alma mater.” She has continued to support IWA and its athletic programs, serving on the Development Committee for several years and in other capacities, as requested. Her energy and excitement in whatever task she takes on is contagious, and has been a powerful source of enthusiasm for IWA. Mary Lou is the proud mother of two sons and grandmother of two grandsons.
