It was a promise Incarnate Word coach Dan Rolfes made last year after he left University Hospital on the road to recovery from a heart attack.

And he was determined to keep it.

"One of the ambulance drivers that took me from here to the hospital," Rolfes said, "he came in every day to see me and when I left, he gave me this shirt. I told him that I was going to wear this when I'm back at state next year."

Incarnate Word fought off Girls Independent Sports League rival Cor Jesu 66-44 in a Class 6 girls basketball state semifinal Wednesday afternoon at Mizzou Arena.

Rolfes donned his present, a black t-shirt with a yellow logo on the front that said "University Ambulance Service EMS Week 2023."
