Sunnie Hughes '97

Hello Red Knight Family! I’m Sunnie E. Hughes, a higher education leader with over a decade of experience helping students develop their cross-cultural skills and multicultural awareness. As a member of the IWA Class of 1997, it is an honor to be able to return home, serving as the new Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). I am truly passionate about leveraging my strengths to help students have a transformational educational experience and truly believe that broadening multicultural awareness is critical for being able to follow the example set by Christ in making a positive impact on our world.

I possess a master’s degree in Higher Education & Administration from St. Louis University. My past experience has focused on creating environments and developing initiatives that help learners to understand, embrace, and advocate for equity and inclusion. Jesus taught that we all belong to the kingdom of God and must treat one another in a fair, equitable manner. My efforts strive to help students develop their understanding, empathy, and compassion in order to emulate Christ.

As DEI Director, my goal is to cultivate an inclusive, harmonious environment where all students feel welcomed and respected while celebrating the aspects that make each person a unique creation of God. I will strive to facilitate the creation of environments where students can feel safe to be their authentic selves and bravely share their views and experiences while acknowledging and listening to those of others. Education, compassion, and respect will be centerpieces of my work with students. Once again, I am overjoyed to be rejoining the Red Knight community and look forward to meeting all of you!
